It’s all about the ‘staycation’ this summer and The Merry Harriers is set to be a big winner of the holidaying-at-home boom. Only an hour & a half from central London this 16th century country pub, set in the glorious Surrey Hills, has taken the bed and breakfast concept to a new level.
First up are the gorgeous shepherds huts. Painted in the prettiest shades, set by a pond, surrounded by ancient oaks and golden fields of outstanding beauty. This is 5* star glamping.
We were treated to crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, perfectly coordinated interiors with every detail considered.
There’s a little kitchen area with matching mugs & a pink Smeg kettle, a fluffy chaired seating area with log burning fire, plus hot shower and heated towel rails. Oh, and a bottle of bubbly in the fridge to enjoy while sitting around your private fire pit and listening to the water trickle into the pond opposite.
That night we trotted across to the Merry Harrier’s pub to enjoy a delicious fish supper of crab, crispy cod, massive prawns, smoked salmon and chips! All in the very pretty pub garden overlooking the Surrey Hills and beyond.

As well as the shepherd’s huts, the Llamas are a big feature of the Merry Harrier’s experience. They have the cutest herd of cheeky Llamas, all with their own big character.
My one ‘Champagne’ took some persuading to go on our trek but was soon distracted by all the yummy brambles and holly to eat. Apparently their palettes are rock solid and they love a thorny nibble. They are also social animals and get very anxious when separated and coo nervously at each other.
We trekked up the glorious hills for a fun and fizzy picnic and then sauntered back through heather-filled fields.
We would have brought Piper, our border terrier as they are very dog friendly but didn’t because the Llama trek which would have been too tricky. Kids at every age would love this place too. It really is heaven and a great price for 5* glamping.
Excellent value at £195 a night for two in the Shepherd’s Hut, including a huge English breakfast
PS … it’s the perfect spot for Instagram outfit pictures!
